🇺🇸 4th of Jule Reflections: For Such a Time as This

You’ve heard this phrase before: “I’m scared/nervous for what my kids will have to phase in this crazy world”. Or, “I feel sorry for my children, this world/our country is just not what it used to be.”.

Fair concerns. There’s a lot of unrest in the world and in our own nation. This 4th of July we saw a great deal of flag burnings, “death to America” chants, and the usual rejection of the celebration by many public figures. Those are just 4th of July happenings, there’s a lot more we could highlight about the current social, cultural, economic, and political landscape of America.

But there’s nothing new under the sun; and we can still trust in the sovereignty of the Lord.

What does the Word of God say about all this? In short: it gives us comfort that our children, as we raise them in a Christian worldview, will be OK.

A common phrase often given as a response to the concerns above is that our children were born for, “such a time as this”. This comes from the book of Esther and we can certainly apply it to our children, and ourselves, today.

What else can we take comfort in? A less commonly quoted verse in Acts speaks volumes to God’s sovereignty when it comes to the time and location each of us were born in,

From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us. (Acts 17:26-27)

The Lord saw it fit that your children would be born in the US (or Germany, Colombia, or Sweden) in the 90s or 2000s, in this time in history. And there’s purpose behind it: that they may find Him.

Let’s parent well, let’s parent intentionally, let’s protect, care and advocate for our children. But let’s not live in a constant state of fear and worry.

We still live in a great nation and are among the most privilege in the World.

And this is not to be taken for granted but rather used as a way to think, and teach our children to think, how can I bless others from this place of privilege?
