There’s a place for you in the foster care system, even if you’re not called to become a foster parent yourself. 

In fact, there’s hundreds of ways you can serve in this space, this week we’re highlighting the CASA/GAL Programs. Court-appointed special advocates (CASA) and Guardian ad Litem (GAL) are volunteers who serve as advocates for the neglected and/or abused children in the court system to ensure judges can make the most well-informed decisions in the best interest of each child. Joining the program does require a background check and training.

Why do they need volunteers? I thought social workers and attorneys handled this. Yes, but the foster care system can be complicated. Children often change foster homes; and case workers, attorneys and judges can also frequently change during the case process. CASA/GAL volunteers often become the most consistent advocate for the child. Check out their advocacy model below.

Abortion in the US Update: Earlier this week, Supreme Court recently upheld access to the chemical abortion pill (currently available in 21 states and available with restrictions in 15). On the front lines of fighting for the voiceless and the women and men hurt by abortion is The Justice Foundation led by Allen Parker. Mr. Parker represented Norma McCorvey, formerly “Roe” of Roe v. Wade, from 2000 to 2012, and Sandra Cano, the “Doe” of Doe v. Bolton, until 2014 in their efforts to overturn these two landmark cases that brought legalized abortion to America.

The bottom line of the ruling: because it was doctors who brought forth the lawsuit against the dangers of the abortion pill, the court ruled they had no standing to sue.

What does this mean: the chemical abortion pill will remain available (subject to each state’s laws) but law suits can continue to be brought forth.
