šŸ” Motherhood Snapshot

Background: Chelsea is a mom of two who shares an amazing and encouraging story of Godā€™s goodness in the mist of infertility plus some more mom wisdom.

Introduction: ā€œIā€™m a mom of 2 trying to do my best, I love to worship Jesus in song and dance, and I do my best to live a very natural holistic life and teach my children who Jesus is...and I love my husband.ā€ ā¤ļø

What are some unique aspects about your motherhood story? ā€œI got married at 23 and we had our first miscarriage at 25, it was an ectopic pregnancy and I lost a tube. It took us 6 years to have Elsie and there were lots of doctors visits, and medicine, and issues between me and my husband besides the missing tube that made it hard for us to get pregnant. So Elsie is our miracle baby because we did get pregnant with her naturally. There were lots of prayers that went into that and I think I have a different perspective on motherhood because it took us so long..I donā€™t want to miss any part of them, but I just donā€™t want to take it for granted in any way because it took us so long. And Opal is a miracle too because we also got pregnant naturally with her.ā€

So when you say naturallyā€¦meaning you didnā€™t have to keep taking medications? ā€œYes. So I have low progesterone, and my husband has whatā€™s called low morphology (more misshapen sperm than normal), so between that and only having one tube, it made things very difficult. So yes, I took medicine for progesterone for 1 year and we never got pregnant. It was stressful and expensive. So we just said we werenā€™t going to do it anymore; and when we did that it was instant peace. We never regretted that decision.ā€

Answered Prayer: ā€œSo during this time God told me through someone else I would be pregnant within 9 months, and within 7 months of that timeline I did get pregnant (this was my first time since ectopic pregnancy) and I ended up with a miscarriage. I remember when month 9 came around I said to God audibly, ā€œWhy didnā€™t You do what You said You were going to doā€. And the answer was, ā€œI did, it just didnā€™t look the way you wanted it to lookā€. My response was ā€œoh man, that is not fair, that is not what I meant!ā€. But He did do it, He did do a miracle because I was pregnant. And maybe 9 months after that I got pregnant with Elsie.ā€

How was your husband throughout all this? ā€œHe was always super supportive and he was heartbroken too every time we had a negative test. And at that point point, sex is just not fun anymore, the process sucks it out of you. We kind of got to a point after we stopped seeing the doctor when we were diligent but we tried to make it fun and that really helped our stress level.ā€

Last thoughts: ā€œThrough this process, I learned how to wait on Him and that things never look the way you want them to look or the way [you think] they should look. And when God says something, it may not always be what you think itā€™ll be. But it doesnā€™t mean He isnā€™t good through all of it. Some day I will ask the Lord why I had to wait so longā€¦but Iā€™m not going to know that answer until we get to heaven.ā€

Switching gears completely, you work PT hours as a Virtual Assistantā€¦how did you get into that space? ā€œWhen I was pregnant I was working as a wire specialist at a bank and they transferred us to WFH but I knew I wasnā€™t going back to work after Elsie. So I went to upwork.com and I used it to find clients. People and companies will post jobs there, everything from data entry, admin work, or just needing to get something edited. Thereā€™s a ton of scams, so you have to weed those out, but thatā€™s how I found my first client. And that was a God thing too. I only worked for him for 8 weeks and he paid upfront for the entire 8 weeks without seeing any of my work. The client I have now actually ended up hiring me through their company but I still do other jobs I find on upwork on the side. You have to have a good cover letter and resume. And there was tons of stuff I didnā€™t know how to do that I just taught myself and figured it out along the way.

But how do you physically get the work done with your toddler and now your new baby? ā€œThe supervisor I work for doesnā€™t care if I work at midnight as long as the work gets done. I make myself available 3 times a week for video calls so we can hash through things. Elsie, my 4 year old, is used to it so sheā€™ll play independently or Iā€™ll play a movie if needed when working for longer chunks of time; and Opal naps on me so I have mastered the art of typing with one hand. Sometimes I work for 6 hrs in the day and it breaks my heart but I need to do it right now and always trying to find a better balance.ā€

What natural approaches do you apply to motherhood? ā€œI thoroughly enjoyed nursing Elsie until she was over 2.5 years old, Iā€™m so thankful I was able to do that. For me, I tend to go towards essential oils and other natural products more than medicine. But I think the biggest thing is eating clean, knowing whatā€™s in my food, buying organic produce or growing it myself. I currently have 25 chickens in my backyard that are about to get butchered in a few weeks and we also have 19 laying hens. But Iā€™m one of those people that, yes Iā€™m gonna butcher my chickens but Iā€™m also gonna to eat M&Msā€¦so thereā€™s a balance! I wonā€™t give them to Elsie, but Iā€™ll eat them! hahaā€

I didnā€™t know Chelsea was a homesteaderā€¦and so wanted to ask her all about how she got into that but it will have to wait for a future part 2. Useful Mom Stuff from the Interweb

Expecting mama read: Real Food For Pregnancy By Lily Nichols. The best guide out there to nutrition while pregnant and PP. Not necessarily a book your read from cover to cover; more like a guide to self address common pregnancy symptoms like nausea and fatigue, and learn what foods are best for you and baby (a lot of it is NOT what youā€™d expect).

Soap pensā€¦as the name implies these are soap pens that dispense soap, suds, and color into your childrenā€™s hand to make washing their hands fun. This would be a great idea for an outdoor party/event or as a fun gift. Color wonā€™t stain!

Summer find for those who like more conservative bathing suits and/or swim dresses: Rey Swimwear makes great pieces, including a mommy and me line. Fun fact: the founder is the yellow Power Ranger actress.

Fun weekend craft: print portraits of your family and make them into magnets for your baby/toddler to play with and practice saying each personā€™s name. How? Using this $15 magnetic sheets with adhesive backing.
